Azerbaijan’s Independence Day Celebrated in Ottawa

An event dedicated to May 28 – Independence Day was held in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The event was organized by a diaspora activist Farid Gasimov with the joint support of the Fund for Support to Azerbaijani Diaspora under the State Committee on Work with Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Canada.

The event was attended by Azerbaijanis living in Ottawa and surrounding cities, representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora, and members of the local community.

First, the national anthems of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Canada were performed.

In his remarks, Vusal Suleymanov, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Canada, emphasized the special significance of May 28 – Independence Day in the history of the Azerbaijani people. He highly appreciated the efforts of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Canada in promoting national values and raising awareness of the truths about Azerbaijan within the international community.

The event continued with speeches by leaders of Azerbaijani diaspora organizations operating across Canada. Anar Ismayilov and Gunel Mammadova, representing the Azerbaijan House in Toronto, Kamala Shiriyeva, Chairperson of the Azerbaijan-Turkish Association, Masud Aliyev, Head of the Quebec Azerbaijanis Association in Montreal, Jeyhun Najafov, Head of the Alberta Azerbaijan Culture Society in Calgary, and Tarana Novruzova, Chairperson of the Azerbaijani Society of British Columbia in Vancouver, spoke about  the history of Azerbaijan’s independence, the remarkable achievements of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic during its brief existence, the preservation and strengthening of the country’s independence through the tireless efforts of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, and the liberation of Azerbaijan’s occupied territories and restoration of its sovereignty under the leadership of Victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev. They also highlighted the importance of cooperation and joint activities among Azerbaijani diaspora organizations across Canada.

The artistic part of the event featured dance performances by the Tabriz Azerbaijani Music and Dance Ensemble based in Toronto and members of the Azerbaijan House. Their performances were met with great interest and enthusiastic applause from the audience.
