“Azerbaijani Heritage Day” was marked in the Parliament of Canada

Toronto Azerbaijan House, “Vatan” Azerbaijani Art and Culture Center, “Azeri Calgary Stars” dance group, “Garabagh” Azerbaijani language school in Ottawa, Association of Azerbaijanis of Quebec, Organization of Azerbaijani Students in Canada, active members of  community Nigar Aliyeva and Emin Garan provided organizational support to the event.

The members of the Canadian parliament and diplomatic corps, members of the Azerbaijani community and friendly nations attended the event.

After welcoming the participants of the event, Lalin Hasanova, the head of “Vatan” Azerbaijani Art and Culture Center and the executive director of the Azerbaijan House in Toronto, expressed her gratitude to the guests.  

National anthems of Azerbaijan and Canada were performed by Hasan Enami, a well-known tenor, People's Artist of Azerbaijan, winner of the President's Award.

Canadian MP Chandra Arya, congratulated our compatriots on the occasion of this important day. Speaking about the close cooperation between the Azerbaijani community and the country's parliament, MP Chandra Arya has pointed out that this year for the first time, Azerbaijani flag was raised in the Canadian parliament on the Independence Day of Azerbaijan.

Speaking at the event, Azerbaijan's charge d'affaires in Canada Vasif Abutalibov, Estonia's ambassador to Canada Margus Rava, Latvia's ambassador to Canada Inga Skruzmane and others highly appreciated the close integration of Azerbaijani  community members into the socio-political and cultural life of this country, its contribution to cultural diversity and the development of Azerbaijan-Canada relations.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's congratulatory letter  to the evenet participants was read at the event. The Prime Minister stressed that bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Canada has a 30-years history.

“In a country built by immigrants, the contributions that Azerbaijani canadians have made and continue to make every day –to our shared nation, are indeed invaluable. Thank you for helping  Canada to become the greatest place to live in the world”-stresses the congratulatory  letter.

Then,  various short videos depicting the ancient history, rich and unique culture, picturesque regions and ethnic diversity of Azerbaijan were demonstrated. It has been pointed out that geographical position of our country, located on the Silk Road, plays a significant role of a bridge between the West and the East.

It was mentioned that the first secular, democratic republic in the East - Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was established on May 28, 1918. It was specially emphasized that Azerbaijani mugham was included in UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008.

In the artistic part of the event, our compatriots Hasan Enami, Aliheydar Mirzabayov and Samad Pourmusavi, who are professional musicians in Canada, performed Azerbaijani folk and composer music. Lala Aslanova, a graduate of the Baku Choreography Academy, laureate of the 2nd international classical and national dance competition named after Gamar Almaszade, laureate of the "Turksoy special award" and Elchin Gadimov, an honored artist of Azerbaijan performed Azerbaijani dances.

The concert program was met with loud applause from the guests. The event ended with an official banquet consisting of our national dishes.

An exhibition reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Azerbaijan was organized within the framework of the event.
