“Pages of History” in Vienna

The musical event titled “Pages of History” was held at the Azerbaijani Cultural Center in Vienna. The event was dedicated to the 120th birth anniversary of the famous 20th-century Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich and it also marked five years of cooperation between the "Music Gives Joy" ("Musik macht Freude - MmF") music school in Vienna and the "Sun Dance Company" dance studio. The musical event was jointly organized by the music school and the dance studio with the support of the Azerbaijan Cultural Centre. The guest of honour was an Austrian musician, conductor, and the head of the youth choir at the Vienna State Opera Johannes Mertl.

The founder and head of the “Mmf” music school Farah Tahirova spoke about how the school and the "Sun Dance Company" successfully represent our country at international festivals and concerts. She also shared her memories of Fuad Ismayilov, the former Azerbaijani Ambassador to Austria. She emphasized his significant role in developing diplomatic and cultural relations between Azerbaijan and Austria. She reminded the audience that, through his personal initiative and hard work, Uzeyir Hajibayli’s operetta "Arshin Mal Alan" was performed in German at the Vienna Chamber Opera in 2006.

A short film about Dmitri Shostakovich was screened at the event. Students of the "MmF" music school shared interesting facts about the composer’s life, with a slideshow of archival photos. They talked about his connection with Azerbaijani musical culture and his important role in the development of the Azerbaijani school of composition. Presentations about the composer's “Tenth Symphony” were also met with great interest. In the third part of the symphony, the theme of Shostakovich’s favourite Azerbaijani student, the renowned composer Elmira Nazirova, is brought to the forefront. One of the highlights of the event was information about two great members of the Azerbaijani school of composition, Gara Garayev and Jovdat Hajiyev, who studied in Dmitri Shostakovich's class at the Moscow Conservatory and their later friendship.

During the artistic part of the event, a rich musical program was presented. It included piano pieces composed by Dmitri Shostakovich for children, as well as works by Azerbaijani, European, and Russian composers. Pieces such as "Legend" and "Sad Story" from the children’s piano series by Gara Garayev and Jovdat Hajiyev, and "Lullaby" from Gara Garayev’s ballet "Path of Thunder," were performed. The performances by students from the "MmF" music school, the Vienna Music Gymnasium (MGW), and the Margareten City Music School amazed the audience. The performances of the young dancers, led by choreographer Lyudmila Detkova from the "Sun Dance Company" dance studio, added a special beauty to the event.

At the end of the event, gratitude was expressed to Leyla Gasimova the director of the Azerbaijan Cultural Centre, for her support in organizing the event.
