Statement regarding the January 20 tragedy was addressed to Norwegian Nobel Committee

A statement was adopted at the end of the video conference titled "Bloody January 20," organized by "Gobustan - Azerbaijani Intellectuals' Hearth" operating in Sweden.

More than 100 participants of the video conference—including members of the "Gobustan - Azerbaijani Intellectuals' Hearth", Azerbaijani diaspora activists, family members of the martyrs of January 20, and January 20 veterans —addressed a statement to the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, and members of the Committee - Asle Toje, Anne Enger, Kristin Clemet, and Gry Larsen.

The statement expressed opposition to the Nobel Peace Prize awarded in October 1990 by the Norwegian Nobel Committee to Mikhail Gorbachev, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. It was emphasized that awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Mikhail Gorbachev, who had blood on his hands from the January 20, 1990, massacre of the Azerbaijani people, was an unjust decision.

It was stated that there are sufficient legal grounds to hold those responsible for the January 20 tragedy accountable. The statement noted that they had violated the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and other international legal conventions.

The importance of revoking Mikhail Gorbachev’s Nobel Peace Prize was highlighted in terms of strengthening global confidence in justice and preserving the moral credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize.
