Surgut Airport will be named after the legendary Azerbaijani geologist Farman Salmanov

Surgut, the largest airport in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug,Russia, will be named after the legendary Azerbaijani geologist Farman Salmanov.
This became known from the results of a nationwide polling in the framework of the project “Great Names of Russia” on assigning the name of prominent personalities to 47 airports in Russia.
The polling results, in which 5 million Russians participated, were announced on 4 December.
Two airports in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Nizhnevartovsk and Surgut airports hаve contested for the name of our compatriot.
According to the results of polling Surgut airport scored more votes. Name option for the Nizhnevartovsk airport will be chosen in the second round оf the project.
Geologist Farman Salmanov, who discovered Siberian oil, was born on July 28, 1928 in the village of Morul, Shamkir District. After graduating from the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, was engaged in the exploration of oil locations in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Region of Russia. His name went down in history as the discoverer of Siberian oil.
For his services, Farman Salmanov was awarded with the title of Hero of Socialist Labour, the Orders of Lenin and the Red Banner of Labor, Honored Geologist of the Russian Federation and other honorary titles. He was an honorary citizen of Surgut and the state of Texas of United States.
