A meeting with representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) was held at the State Committee on Work with Diaspora. The geography, number and strategic development of diaspora, organizing of international summit of diaspora ministries in Baku and cooperation in other spheres related to diaspora was discussed at he meeting. Representatives of the State Migration Service and the Ministry of Education also attended the meeting.
The head of migrants’ protection and support sector of IOM Marija Nikolovska, informed the participants about their activities and projects conducted on the determination of the number of Azerbaijanis in Russia and Turkey. Speaking about the problems of migrants, the representative of the organization expressed their interest for cooperation between State Committee on Work with Diaspora and IOM.
Vugar Mammadov, head of the department on work with International organizations of the Committee, spoke about the history, location geography, structure and number of the Azerbaijani diaspora and said that a new diaspora strategy has been developed by the State Committee to meet modern challenges.
It was stressed in the meeting that identification of the number of Azerbaijani diaspora remains a problem, since Azerbaijanis were registered under the name of Turkish, Persian, Russian and other nations in certain periods of history. It was emphasized that cooperation with IOM could be useful in this regard. Then participants spoke about our compatriots in Georgia and the educational, cultural, social and sport projects conducted for their integration into the local community.
The meeting focused on future cooperation on the determination of the number of our compatriots in different countries, the protection of Azerbaijani migrants’ rights and so on.
